ADOPTED

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Looking for a young, intelligent, adorable little dog who wants to be your constant companion in life? Then check out Crumpet, she might be just what you are looking for! Crumpet is a female, Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier cross who weighs approximately 8.5 lbs and is just over 1 year old. She has the quirkiest coat that is mostly smooth with a little scruff on her face and some longer hairs on her back…it almost looks like she is wearing a grass skirt. She has an athletic build and when she is happy, she prances with those long legs of hers and a ‘smile’ on her face. She gets a lot of smiles and questions of “what breed is she?” when out on walks. She is an incredibly devoted dog to her person and will shower them with affection when she knows she is home and they are hers.

Let’s get her quirks out of the way first, as Crumpet is looking for a specific kind of home. Crumpet came to us from a remote location approximately 300km north of Thunder Bay. In this location her socialization greatly lacked and she was a small dog in a big dog’s world for that first year of her life. As such, she needed to be a tough little one to keep herself from becoming a victim of a physical confrontation with the bigger, roaming dogs…she would be a very easy target given her size. Due to these early experiences, she is not comfortable around dogs larger than her. This is something she may eventually overcome, but that will take a lot of time, patience and dedication to training and socialization on the part of her new family. She does currently live with dogs her size and she does ok, but the truth is Crumpet would prefer to be the only dog. Now that she has the comforts of a home, regular meals and a person to love, she wants to keep those things all to herself. Crumpet doesn’t share well and would be best suited as the only animal in her future home where she never has to feel like she might lose these valuable things in her life.

Crumpet is going to need a patient vet and a patient groomer (to help with her nails) as being reached for and handled by unknown people is very stressing for her. Given her background, as you can imagine having strange people approach and handle her makes her very anxious. This is also one of the reasons she will not be suitable to a home with children. She will be best matched to an adult only home. It takes her time to warm up to new people, so having a lot of frequent visitors won’t be ideal until she has progressed further down the road of her training and socialization. Crumpet becomes protective of her people, she’s got your back and wants to keep you safe. She will warn (bark) at strange people in her home. She is coming a long way with this and meets people much better now, but this is still something that is going to take time and patience to have her fully relax around strangers.

In the home, Crumpet is a well-mannered companion. She has not shown to be destructive and she is housebroken, but she doesn’t yet know how to tell you she has to go outside. She will begin to pace when it is bathroom time and you will need to be aware so you can let her outside. She can use pee pads if necessary but she prefers to go outside. She won’t want to be outside without you as she feels a little insecure about that at the moment, so be prepared to put on the coat and shoes and join her out there. She often turns bathroom breaks into a quick game of chase with you or does some zoomies in the yard. She LOVES being outdoors but not alone, so if you love hanging out in the yard in good weather, she is going to be right there with you. Being part Jack Russell, Crumpet can get barky when she is excited, playing or alerting to ‘dangers’ approaching the home (i.e. – people/dogs walking by or strange noises outside). She also doesn’t like it when you leave the house without her and will voice her opinion of that, although she does settle after a few minutes. It is for these reasons, Crumpet will not be a candidate for an attached living situation and she really would thrive with a fully fenced yard that can be come her kingdom.

Now let’s get to the super fun and endearing things about Crumpet that make her such a wonderful and joyful companion. She is wickedly smart and highly trainable. She loves food which is a great motivator for training, but she loves praise form you even more. Once she bonds with her person, her world is all about them. She wants to make you happy, she wants to smother you with kisses and cuddles and if she could spend every minute of every day with you, she would gladly do so. Now that she knows what it is like to be loved and wanted, she can’t get enough of it. She walks beautifully on leash and is a huge fan of hitting trails and greenspaces. She makes a great road trip companion as she now rather enjoys riding in the car in a booster seat and watching the world go by. She will sometimes bark at people or other dogs passing by in the car or on the sidewalk, but it is pretty easy to get her attention back to you with a playful voice and a few treats to reward her for checking in with you. It will take her more time and exposure to further relax in these scenarios, but she is making awesome progress. Keep in mind what her first year was like for her, most of the bigger world is brand new to her and it is going to take time to realize it can be a pretty cool place.

Crumpet is always up for a play session. She has mastered the game of fetch and has learned ‘drop it’ by trading off her toy for a treat. She loves to play hide and seek with you in the house and yard, she loves to chase you around outside and although she turns on her play mode with lightening speed, she is not demanding of your time to do so. If you want to binge watch the latest show, she is happy to either snuggle up beside you or entertain herself with a stuffed Kong, a dog puzzle or her beloved stuffed rabbit. Yes, the rabbit which is the same size she is, will be coming home with her. It is like her teddy bear…a source of comfort and fun and she treats it like her precious little companion, never damaging it and often found giving it a good grooming session. Crumpet is crate trained and sleeps with her stuffed bunny every night; if it’s not in her crate with her, she gets a little stressed out until it finds its way home to her.

Crumpet is such a fun, sweet, affectionate, intelligent and quirky little side kick and she is looking for someone to be as devoted to her as she will be to them.  Her ideal home would be that of an active person or couple that is in early retirement or is home more than not. A quiet rural home with a fully fenced yard would be her dream as she is a nature loving girl and likes the quieter life. She does need to be matched with a family/person that can give her the physical activity, socialization and attend group training classes with her that she will need. If you can put in the time with her, she is going to be the most wonderful little adventure buddy. There is no doubt she would take to canoeing, paddle boarding, hiking trails, road tripping or cottaging with her people. Wherever you are, doing whatever it is you are doing, Crumpet wants to be right there with you. If you think she sounds like what you are looking for, she’d love to meet you!
