Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.
Introducing Dawson. This high energy little man is quite the looker! With his bright blue eyes, and his tricolor coat he is definitely a unique little pup. Dawson is a mix of beagle and pomsky (pomeranian and husky cross. Although sometimes in the puppy mill world this could mean eskimo spitz, based on his size we suspect the latter) Although it is hard to say we think Dawson may end up being around 25-30lbs when he is full grown.
Dawson has come to PDR after being discarded by a puppy mill. From the moment he walked into his foster home he has been all goofs and sass! He is a very personable pup and has warmed up immediately to all the people he has met . He is an energy-packed puppy who loves to zoom around and wrestle with his foster siblings. Like a typical puppy, Dawson is currently teething so EVERYTHING goes in his mouth. His future forever family will need to keep a close eye on him as he continues to learn what is safe for chewing and what is not. Dawson is showing himself to be quite a smart little boy and is picking up on the routine of day to day life quite quickly. He has been learning about crate training, and spends his evenings and times when his foster family is out of the house in his crate. While he is quite calm sleeping in his crate at night he does still take a few minutes to settle while being crated during the day. Crate training is an excellent tool to keep puppies safe when they are unattended and to help them develop a sense of independence while not with their “pack”.Dawson has had a visit with the vet and has been given his puppy vaccinations, and has been treated for fleas/ticks/intestinal parasites. It should be noted that Dawson has not yet been neutered. Anyone interested in adopting him will need to live within 1hr of Cambridge, ON as he must be returned to our vet at 6 months of age to be neutered. He will be adopted out on a contract that stipulates this and it is mandatory. This is covered in the adoption fee. So far he has shown to be tolerant of grooming needs such as baths and nail cuttings.
Like most puppies this silly boy loves to play hard! He loves playing tug of war and running around the house chasing his foster siblings or fetching toys. His foster family is working on teaching him how to relax as well as play politely, as this is a skill that puppies develop over time. When he finally sits still he loves a good cuddle with his foster humans and doggy siblings. Dawson has been learning to walk on leash, and has started taking small walks outside through the neighborhood. He is also working on his house training, which like most puppies is a work in progress that requires consistency from his humans and lots of patience. He often gets distracted while out in the yard and forgets that he has a job to do! His forever family should know that puppies need to be taken outside for bathroom breaks very regularly when they are small and will not be able to hold it for an 8hr work day. He can only hold it during the day for a max of 3 to 4 hrs at this age so his forever family will need to be able to accommodate a puppy schedule. He is also still waking up once in the night for a potty break.
We are looking for families that are fully aware of the time commitment of a puppy and the work involved. Puppies are a total joy and bring so much love and happiness into a home, but you cannot underestimate the work and time involved in raising a puppy properly. Dawson would do best with a fenced in yard where he is safe and can be supervised outdoors at all times while she’s still young. He would do best with two or three good walks a day (shorter ones while young), and will grow into a very active dog that would benefit from longer activities and hikes. He is going to be a very energetic dog that requires a lot of fast paced exercise when older. He will not be suitable for those who can only accommodate a short, slower paced walk. Although he won’t be big, he will be very athletic and very active and only those who are currently very active and outdoorsy people should consider this cute puppy.Dawson has shown to have quite the bold personality! He is smart as a whip but also has a lot of opinions on what he likes to do! He is quite the vocal little gentleman which is quite common for husky and spitz breeds, because of this we do not recommend that he go to a forever home in an apartment or condo; he will need a detached home. He will need a family that understands how important boundaries are for puppies, even when he voices his disagreement.
Dawson has been very well behaved with the other dogs that he has met, and so far has not shown any interest in small animals outside. He has not been tested with cats. We think he would do well with an older dog sibling to show him the ropes, but also would do great as a solo dog in a home.Because of his age he needs a family with children 8 years of age or older who can handle puppy antics, be careful to close doors, and understand that sometimes hands look like toys when playing and can be nipped.
Dawson has been such a treat to foster! His spunky high energy personality is keeping everyone up and moving, and his sweet snuggles and kisses certainly warm the heart. This little dude has a lot to offer, and would be perfect for an active home who love the outdoors and exploring the world. Think this could be you? Apply today!
