Finnick

ADOPTED

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Let me introduce you to this little firecracker named Finnick, who we also affectionately call Fin.  Finnick is an approximately 6 month old mix between a Pomeranian and a Spitz, also known as a Pomsky.  Finnick has a beautiful thick coat with long blonde coloured fur, he really is such a little floofy butt, and he has a thick curly tail!  He has a very precious looking face with very loving honey coloured eyes that just melt your heart.  Finnick weighs about 16 lbs and I figure he will be around the 20 lb mark as he has mostly finished growing.  Finnick is definitely a smaller sized dog, but he certainly has big dog personality.

Finnick came to us as a puppy mill discard as he and many of his siblings were not being purchased.  Finnick was lucky enough to land a spot in a foster home with Pound Dog Rescue!  Being that Finnick came from a puppy mill, he had very limited socialization and interaction with people prior to coming into foster care, and because of that he is quite nervous around new people.  It will take time and patience for his new family to build up confidence with Finnick for him to become the best boy that he can be.  When Finnick first arrived in our home, it was clear to see that he wanted to seek affection from us and he was eager to be around us, but he still had no trust and therefore we were unable to bend down and pet him.  After a few days, and with the help of the other dogs in the home, Finnick quickly learned to trust us and now actively seeks out our affection daily and will wag his little tail when we call his name.

Given the conditions that Finnick was in for so long, it took a little while for him to get the hang of his housetraining.  Finnick does still have the occasional accident if we aren’t paying attention, however these accidents are very few and far between.  Finnick is very clean in his crate and has not had a single accident.  Finnick really enjoys his crate as we have made it a very comfy place for him with blankets and we feed him all of his meals in there.  Whenever it’s time for the humans to go to bed or leave for work, Finnick will always happily run right into his crate, especially knowing that he will get a tasty treat once he’s in there.  Finnick is generally very quiet when he is in his crate, however there have been some occasions where he has sang us the song of his people and give us some cute low howls, but that usually doesn’t last long.

Finnick is living in a home with adults and teens, dogs that range from big to little and old to young, as well as a cat.  Once Finnick learned to trust us, it was clear to see that Finnick loves his people first and foremost.  If he had to pick between humans and dogs, he would always pick the humans.  Finnick is very affectionate and loves to give us kisses, and absolutely loves to snuggle on the couch.  Finnick is one of those dogs who you will always find sleeping at your feet, if you’re sitting up to the table, he will be at your feet, if your standing up to the counter, he will be at your feet, he’s usually never far!  When it comes to the dogs, Finnick does enjoy playing with them but he also really enjoys his time on his own.  He will happily join in on a game of tug of war, but then will find a toy or chew bone to curl up on the pet bed with to have some quiet time for himself.  He is very respectful of the older dogs in the home and that they don’t want to play and want their space, and he is more than happy to give them the space that they require.  Finnick does have a cat in his foster home who is very dog savvy, however we would recommend Finnick not have a cat in his forever home as he has quite the prey drive for such a little dog!  He will actively try to hunt/run at the cat and will also bark at her.  We feel that Finnick would do well in a home with kids aged 8+ as he would not enjoy the running and screaming that inevitably come with younger children playing.  Finnick would do well having another dog in the home, however Finnick would also greatly enjoy being the only dog.

Finnick is a medium energy dog and he has really been enjoying his walks while in foster care.  He still finds the outside world to be a bit of a scary place, but he is gaining more confidence with each walk that he goes on.  He is currently being walked on his martingale collar and he is doing really well with his leash respect and understanding that he cannot pull on his walks.  Continued daily walks will really help him solidify this great walking trait.  Finnick hasn’t encountered many other dogs or people on his walks so it’s hard to say how he would respond, but if his people are keeping his attention then I feel that he would be happy to just continue walking on by.  He has seen some wildlife on his walks and he is certainly interested in them, however if you keep talking to him and keep walking he will eventually ignore them.    Finnick has been working on some basic obedience while in his foster home, he has been working on general house manners, he understands to come when his name is called, he knows that “uh uh” means to leave something alone and he knows sit, we are still working on the down command with him.  We are looking for a home for Finnick with someone who will not only complete the required basic obedience, but will take him on to advance levels of obedience so that he can grow to be the best dog that he can be.  It’s important to remember that training is a lifelong commitment for dogs and they thrive on learning and working with their owners.  Both of Finnicks breeds are known to be a bit stubborn, so it’s important that his forever families are really committed to his training progress.

Finnick has been on a few car rides while in our care, he currently rides in a crate in the back seat.  Finnick does get a little anxious when travelling in the car and he does whine a bit, however it slowly gets better as the drive goes on and eventually he curls up and will just lay down.

We are looking for a loving home for Finnick with someone who has the time to work with him to build his confidence by taking him to training classes and to take him on many walks and adventures daily.  He is looking for a home where he can be the only dog, or he would also be happy with another dog in the home.  Finnick would love to have a fenced in backyard for him to run around and play in, or at least a secure area where he could hang out outside and play with his humans.  While he does occasionally howl in his crate, he’s not very loud and it’s not very frequent and we feel that he would be fine living in a home that shares walls with other people.
