ADOPTED

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Have you been looking for that perfect dog companion, you know the one that ticks off all the boxes – friendly with people and dogs, excellent traveller, great house companion and always up for an adventure?  If this is the kind of dog you are looking for then read on as you might be the perfect family/person for Hershey!

Hershey is a 1 year old Mastiff/Shepherd/Hound/Lab mix, he has a beautiful flat black coat with some nice tan markings, and a cute little white streak on his nose.  Hershey is about 66lbs and is at a healthy weight for a dog his size.  He has energetic brown eyes  and a big smiling face.

Hershey came to us because his family was unfortunately unable to keep up with his exercise needs.  Hershey is a very active one year old boy who is always up for an adventure, he loves to go for walks and hikes and smell all the smells!  Hershey is an excellent walker and loves to sniff the ground, be sure to have some treats with you though, as he does have lots of interest in rabbits and squirrels!  But with some treats and praise you can keep him right at your side. He is not vocal when he is on his walks and will not bark at any people/dogs/animals that he sees, which is wonderful!   Hershey is an excellent traveller when it comes to the car, he likes to ride in the back seat and will either curl up in a ball and sleep, or he will lean up against the door with his head sitting on the ledge by the window.  Hershey has been on many car rides long and short and he has always been an excellent passenger.

Hershey would love to have a house with a large, fenced backyard for him to run and play in, as he is certainly a lover of the outdoors and enjoys spending time outside on the nice days.  Hershey is currently living in a home with a family that has two young teenagers and he does very well with them, though he does love to play with them and there is some nipping so I would suggest any kids in his home should be at least 8 years old and well versed in proper dog play.  Hershey is also being fostered with many other dogs, and let me tell you, he loves to play!  He is such a friendly dog and immediately wants to be everyone’s friend.  We have recently introduced some foster puppies into the home and he has done exceptionally well with them, but sometimes he does forget how big he is so these play sessions are monitored closely.  It’s really important that Hershey’s forever home has no small animals of any kind.  Hershey has an exceptionally high prey drive and he will fixate on any small animals in the home.

Hershey has been a lovely house guest, he is fully house trained and there have been no accidents indoors, he is also fully crate trained and his crate is currently where he spends his time during the night and when we are gone for the day.  He does really well with going into his crate and will happily settle in until it’s time to come out.  Hershey isn’t overly vocal when he’s in his crate, however he can get pretty vocal when he tries to play with the other dogs.  Hershey is one of those dogs where he just wants people to pay attention to him, he doesn’t want you to be busy doing other things, he wants you to hang out with him!  Hershey is happiest when you’re playing tug or ball with him, or when you’re on the ground hanging out with him.  His favourite morning routine is to grab a toy and lay on my yoga mat with me while I’m doing my exercises, he just wants to be near me. He is a very loving and dedicated dog…you will have a very loyal companion with Hershey; he adores his family.

Hershey has been through some training and he is a highly food motivated boy.  This boy knows many commands including sit, down, wait, come, look at me, and kennel.  It’s really important that his forever family/person be committed to his ongoing training and sign him up for advanced obedience and manners so that he can continue to become the best dog that he can be.

Overall Hershey has been one of the most fantastic and loveable dogs that we have had the pleasure of fostering.  He is such a sweet boy that wants to be with you for all your adventures.  It’s important that anyone looking to adopt Hershey understands that he requires lots of exercise both physically and mentally, one or two short walks a day won’t cut it for this boy. He likes good long walks at a fast pace, or hikes, runs, play time…you name it, he’s game!!  If you’re an active and outdoorsy person, I urge you to consider adding Hershey to your family.  Hershey would love to have another young playful dog in the home to be a buddy, but he would also be happy being an only dog and receiving all of the attention.

If Hershey looks like the dog for you then please fill out an application for him!
