ADOPTED
Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.
Meet Junie, the tiniest beagle with the biggest heart! Junie is a 7 year old Beagle with the cutest little brown patches & freckles. Her floppy ears and tail that constantly wags in circles will instantly steal your heart. She is the smaller size of Beagles, the 13” high size, so she is a little dog who is quite adorable.
Junie came to us from a rural pound where she was abandoned. She was quite underweight at 19lbs, with her ideal weight being around 24lbs. Over our time together she has had no problem putting on the pounds, as any Beagle does, she LOVES food. Whatever her past life looked like, Junie has opened her heart for a new future. She absolutely loves everyone she meets, and is always ready for a new adventure. As long as her people are with her, she is the absolute happiest.
Junie can be left alone for about 5 hours, we find any more than this she needs a washroom break. Her best home would be someone that is around more often than not for this reason, as well as Junie loves to be around people.
As a ‘mature’ lady, Junie loves a routine. She will sit and wait patiently by the front door when she knows it is time for her walk. Her natural energy level is low, but loves going on her two walks a day. She is quite content to snooze the remainder of the day away. This being said, if you are up for any adventure, Junie would love to come. She loves checking out hiking trails, the dog-friendly cafe’s & farmers markets, and sniffing all the smells around our local park. She is excellent on her leash, and will only pull when she gets on the scent of something.
Junie hardly ever barks, her loudest noise is her snoring while she sleeps! The only time she has let her Beagle howl out was when she was really excited playing with other dogs, or playing with her favourite toy. But I think this is her trying to figure out a world that involves being goofy! She would do well in a home with a fenced in backyard or she would be suitable for condo living with frequent leashed visits to sniff outside. Junie loves to soak up the sun on the patio, but her favourite place to nap is her large pet bed or on the sofa. She loves a good couch cuddle and lots of belly rubs.
We quickly learned that Junie does not like being confined, and is quite the escape artist when it comes to baby gates. At some-point in her life we are assuming she was confined for long periods at a time, as her teeth are worn down from biting metal. She will begin to do this at her crate if left for longer periods. This being said, Junie is amazing within the house. She has never attempted to destroy anything, and will happily sleep the day away while you are not there.
We are still working on her crate training skills, and showing her it is a happy place to hang out. She is fed all her meals and chew treats in her crate, and she is beginning to settle in her crate while people are at home.
The vet has noted her teeth are stable, and as long as she is not showing pain in eating harder kibble or chews than this should be fine to continue to be left alone. It is something that her new family will have to keep an eye on. Should her teeth wear down more in time and a root get exposed she will need a dental, but this isn’t warranted now. Junie has tested positive for Lyme disease. In regards to her Lyme disease, her previous owner obviously didn’t have her on the preventative which would have ensured she was protected. Lyme disease is a preventable disease that is spread by ticks. This disease is in Southern Ontario and we are seeing more and more of it as each year passes. We are a rescue that heartworm and lyme tests all of the dogs we take in for exactly this reason. The good news is that Junie is completely free of symptoms and is an otherwise healthy dog. Junie has been cleared to be adopted as there is no reason to hold her back. Junie has no need to be on medication for Lyme as she has no symptoms. Her adoptive family just needs to be aware of her Lyme status and advise their vet of it and understand that she will test positive for Lyme’s every time she has her heartworm/lyme tests done. She will also need to go to a family who will ensure that she is kept on tick preventative yearly so she doesn’t end up getting re-infected. She also had an umbilical hernia which we had repaired so that is all taken care of.
Junie does well in the car. She goes in her crate for longer trips, and on shorter trips is seat belted in with a harness where she will happily sit in the backseat.
Junie has been living with another smaller dog in the house, and often looks to him for comfort. She loves knowing where he is, and sleeping in the same area as him. She is just learning how play works with dogs, and coming out of her shell to be silly. Her new home could be with or without a doggie companion, but if another dog is present it should let her sleep when she wants and know when playing is too much. On walks she is very neutral with other dogs walking past. She is happy to sniff and say hello, and is more interested in befriending smaller dogs.
As a hound, Junie does have a prey drive. Although she may not be as quick to react with her age, if she sees a squirrel or bunny she wants to chase it. She is not cat tested, but for this reason we feel a cat free home would be best.
Although Junie loves meeting all people, kids included, she doesn’t have the fastest reaction time and thrives in a calm household. Young children would not be the best fit, as it will be overwhelming for her. She is often confused by very fast human movements or rowdy situations. She wants a quiet and calm home.
Junie is such a gentle dog that will let you pick her up, and handle her no problem. She is not a fan of bath time, but only puts up a fuss by trying to escape the tub. She handles food gently, and has shown no guarding of food behaviours. We are working on her counter surfing, but because of her size this is really only if you have food on the coffee table. She may or may not have stolen a whole butter tart on our first days with her!
Her other training includes door manners, and not running out the front door. She only tends to do this when her humans are leaving and she doesn’t want to be left out! Once told to stay, she has been getting better with giving the door distance. She has learned “sit” and is working on “bed” to go to her place.
If you are looking for the sweetest soul dog, Junie has you covered! She will be the perfect side kick to any adventure, as long as you provide her endless love, a few treats, and snuggles back.
