Kili

ADOPTED

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Let me introduce you to Kili, an Australian Shepherd mixed with a Beagle who is about 12 weeks old.  Kili currently weighs 20 pounds, and still has some growing to do.  Kili is going to be a medium sized dog around 40 or so pounds.  Kili is still a fluff ball of a puppy with thick puppy fur that is a gorgeous chestnut brown colour with darker brown markings throughout that really show in the sun, he also has some white on his front legs, back feet, around his collar and chest and a mark down his face.  Kili is such a sweet natured dog and you can see it when you look into his beautiful brown eyes that show such curiosity for his surroundings.

Kili and his sibling Fili were unfortunately puppy mill discards that didn’t find a home, so Pound Dog Rescue took them in to give them the best chance at finding their forever homes.  Kili was full of joy and excitement when we brought him into our home and it didn’t take long for him to warm up to his surroundings!  He loves to explore his surroundings and has such confidence to explore and do whatever he wants to do.  This boy is certainly a leader, though he is always happy to follow the crowd.

Kili would do well in pretty much any home situation as he is a pretty easy going guy.  He absolutely looooves his brother and his foster dog siblings and wants to run around and play with them all the time.  When they are outside it is constant playing and trying to find somewhere to dig a hole, once he comes in there is always a bit more play time, then some independent play with a toy or chew bone, and then he will find a nice quiet and comfy place to take a nap.  Kili’s ideal home would have another playful dog for him to expel some energy, but we also think Kili would do well as an only dog.  Kili can at times be a stubborn little boy and he wants to do things on his own time and thinks he can do whatever he wants, when he wants to do it.  Kili is also currently living with a cat, he has not had much exposure to the cat other than to see her on her perch, but he has not shown any interest in her.  Kili also lives with two teens in the house, considering he is still a puppy we have not noticed too much mouthing, but when it does happen we are quick to correct and he is very responsive to correction.  He loves when the kids get down on the floor and play with him!  When he gets excited he gets some full body wiggles going on and his little tail will wag a mile a minute.

Kili would love a big fenced in backyard to be able to run around and play in, he loves playing outside so much and it is probably his favourite thing to do (other than sleep).  Kili should have a fully fenced, escape proof and dig proof backyard to ensure his safety when he is in the backyard.  Kili is crate trained, so when it is bedtime or time for the humans to leave the house he happily walks into his crate and waits for a couple of treats.  Kili has never barked when we put him in his crate and usually doesn’t make a peep all through the night and not even in the morning.  Sometimes in the morning if we are taking a while to wake up he will let out a few whines, but otherwise he is very quiet.  When we put him in his crate during the day he will happily go in and take a nap, if he feels like he has been in there for a while and you keep walking by his crate he will eventually get restless and bark at you a bit, but generally speaking he is very quiet when in his crate.

Kili has been doing really well with his house training, despite his stubbornness. He is still pretty young but most days we are accident free.  Occasionally he will have an accident in the house, but it is mostly due to us not keeping a schedule and letting him out at appropriate times.  Kili does not yet have a tell and therefore he will not let us know when he needs to go out, but if you’re providing him ample opportunity he will always do his business outside.  His forever home will need to make sure they are diligent with him during the first few weeks to keep him on the right track with his housetraing.  Kili knows to come when he is called and he knows to sit.  Overall though, Kili is such a well mannered little guy that he has been an absolute dream to have.  Once he gets some playtime outside he mostly takes a nap.  Kili will on occasion find an empty toilet paper roll to chew, but he is generally pretty good to only chew on his toys.  Kili is a pretty chill and relaxed pup, he doesn’t mind hanging out in a different room then you and doesn’t feel the need to follow you everywhere you go.  Kili loves attention and if you are petting another dog, you can bet that he’s going to push his way through to make sure that he can get in on some of the pet action too.

Kili is a really good eater and his favourite time of the day is meal time!  He is extremely food motivated which will make training a bit easier of an experience.  When his food bowl is ready to go, he runs straight to his crate so that he can eat.

Kili has been a good passenger in the car when we have gone out, he has been crated during drives and has also sat on a lap.  He has been on many car rides both long and short and he has been excellent for all of them.  Kili has been doing some small walks to help him get acquainted with walking on leash.  With lots of excitement he is more than happy to follow along with you, but every once in a while he will need some encouragement to keep following, instead of sitting down or trying to go back the other way.  He is still pretty young so he is still learning and understanding about walks, as he gets older his walks should become much more frequent and longer.  Obedience training will be a must with Kili as it will help him develop a wonderful relationship with his new family, but also it will help him to understand what is expected of him and help set out rules in his new home.  This should be followed by an advanced obedience class to get him to be the best boy he can be.

Being Kili is still such a young puppy, we will only consider a home for him where someone is home or has the capability to come home throughout the day.  Puppies need to be taken outside for bathroom breaks very regularly when they are small and will not be able to hold it for an 8 hour work day.  We are also looking for a family or person that is fully aware of the time commitment of a puppy and the work involved.  Puppies are a total joy and bring so much love and happiness into a home, but you cannot underestimate the work and time involved in raising a puppy properly.  They need constant supervision while young to expedite the house training stage and to ensure they aren’t chewing on anything inappropriate.

Kili is looking for his forever family with someone who will spend their time walking and playing with him, going to training class, and someone who will relax with him at the end of the day.  Ideally he would like to have a large fenced yard with another young playful dog to keep him company and run around with.  Kili is such a handsome, calm and sweet natured dog and he is looking for someone who will love him forever and be active with him.  Kili has been such an easy dog to love, his eyes and mannerism say it all in how sweet he is, if you’re ready for your days to be filled with looking at him and your heart breaking in a happy way because of how sweet he is then maybe you are the home for him!
