Kipper

ADOPTION PENDING

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Meet Kipper! This beautiful guy is an approximately 2 year old neutered male Border Collie. He has a luxurious black and white coat and bright golden brown eyes. He is currently about 45lbs, and while he is full grown, he is a little underweight and we are working on getting him to his ideal weight. He came to Pound Dog Rescue as an unclaimed stray at a rural pound as is looking for a fresh start with a family that will be as devoted to him as he will be to them.

Kipper is a true Border Collie through and through. Anyone interested in him must have a good understanding and love of his breed. He is not well suited for first time dog owners. His herding instinct is very strong and he is always on the move. He does not nip at you when he is in this mode, but he is constantly underfoot. He is always eager for attention and soaks it all up. He loves to learn and to try to understand his people. Quick to learn commands, he will excel in advanced obedience training. He is very treat motivated, making training a positive experience.  We will only consider a home for Kipper where his family will commit to advanced levels of obedience school with him.  This is a true working dog and we want him to live his very best life.

Kipper’s absolute favourite thing is getting attention from his people. He could be pet for hours and still want more. He will make an amazing side kick for the right someone. We are working on his “off” command, as he does like to jump up to be as close to you as possible. He is quick to roll over on his back for belly rubs, or cuddle on the couch, or just be pet standing next to you. Kipper is never far from his people, but he will relax and lay on the floor in the same room as you.

Kipper is about as sweet natured as they come. You will melt when he looks up at you with his golden brown eyes and Border Collie smile.  He is a real charmer and gets everyone he meets to fall in love. He loves meeting new people and is very polite. He also loves his exercise and needs to be exercised regularly to relax in the house. He would absolutely love a running buddy! Kipper has a need for speed and often gets the “zoomies” and will race around in the backyard. He is not well suited for someone who does not already live an active lifestyle. An interest in agility or other sports would be a huge bonus, as mental stimulation for him will tire him out much faster. A tired dog is a happy dog!!

Something we are working on is his food guarding. Likely due to his previous history, he has grown protective over food. He is fed in his crate, and is cratedduring our meal times to avoid any conflict over dropped food. He is doing well with this, but his future home should be aware of this and continue to work with him. He takes treats very gently and we have has no issues with him trying to steal food.

Kipper is completely house trained. He can go through the night without needing to go outside. He will go to the door when he needs to go outside, and is let out regularly throughout the day. He is also crate trained and knows his crate is his safe space. He is crated to eat, during family mealtimes, overnight, and sometimes during the day if unsupervised. He goes into his crate easily by gesturing to the door and saying “kennel” and rests quietly in there. He sometimes barks when you leave the house, but quiets quickly. Otherwise Kipper is a pretty quiet dog! He barks occasionally – when he wants back inside, or if he is in his kennel and there is something going on he can’t see, but mostly is a “seen but not heard” kind of dog.

In Kipper’s foster home there are other dogs, a cat, a rabbit, and young children. He pays little attention to the other dogs and has no desire to play with them. He doesn’t have any issue with them, but doesn’t like having to compete for any attention from his people. While he absolutely loves the kids (they have hands to pet him!!), he should not have young children in his new home due to his herding and his food guarding behaviours. He should not have cats or small animals in his forever home as he has a strong prey drive. His ideal home would have no other pets or children, or another laid back dog that isn’t interested in play either.

At his vet visit he had his routine blood test done and it showed he was positive for Lyme disease. This means Kipper was bit by a Lyme positive tick at some point in his life. He is asymptomatic, and after follow up testing was done, it has been determined he does not need any treatment for this. In the future, he will likely test positive again on his yearly blood work, but it should not affect him in any other way. Otherwise he is completely healthy and very active.

Kipper is looking for his forever family. They would be someone who would love to have a “velcro dog” and can give seemingly endless amounts of pets. They would have an active lifestyle that he could be incorporated into. They will be devoted to training and encouraging him to be the best dog he can be. If this sounds like you, then Kipper would love to meet you!!
