ADOPTED
Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.
I welcome you all to meet Katniss and Primrose, or as they are otherwise affectionately known in our house, Grumpy Hippos. These girls are Mini Bulldogs, which essentially means that they are a Bulldog mixed with a Boston Terrier. These girls will be a small to medium sized dog and will be about 30lbs give or take once they are fully grown. They will be a short stocky dog, but will be lean and agile enough for all the fun activities. The girls are about 3.5 months old, and have a beautiful short coat of red and white
fur. They have such curious and inquisitive brown eyes, and are both so loveable.
Katniss and Primrose were taken in by Pound Dog Rescue from a puppy mill that was unable to sell them
and decided to just offload them. Being taken into rescue at such a young age certainly saved these girls
from the possible terrible life of neglect that often come with puppy mills. These girls are both very happy
go lucky puppies and love to see anyone who comes into the house, they have not shown any fear to any
people yet. These girls are still very excitable little puppies and one of their favourite things to do is to
jump all over you to get lots of pets and attention, they really just want to make sure that we don’t forget
about them. We have been working on correcting them when they do this, and their forever homes will
need to make sure they stay consistent with keeping them from jumping as well.
Katniss and Primrose are both fully crate trained and they go into their crate to eat their meals, as well as
to spend some time while the family is gone, sleeping or if someone has some meetings at home. These
girls have loved their crates from day one and are more than happy to go right in if you have a tasty treat
to give them when they go in. They are both very quiet in their crates and there has only been the
occasional time where they have made some noise, and usually its when they hear you coming home or
waking up and it’s because they’re just so darn excited to come out and play. These girls love to go
outside and run around in the backyard and play, they will go tearing off chasing each other around the
yard chasing each other, leaves or toys. While having their own fully fenced backyard would be ideal,
they certainly do not require it and would be happy in a home with a smaller backyard as long as their
exercise needs were being met otherwise.
Katniss and Primrose are still working on their leash skills and getting out for walks, they can be a bit timid
when it comes time to exploring the outside world, but treats and lots of praise will have these girls
walking like a pro with full confidence in no time. Training classes will help with their socialization big
time, and being bulldogs are notorious for being stubborn dogs, training classes are even more important.
We expect each of these girls to be enrolled into a Basic Obedience/Level 1 obedience at minimum,
however I can’t stress enough how beneficial advanced levels of training would be for dogs like Katniss
and Primrose. Continued training classes will help these girls really understand what is expected of them
and help them become the best dogs that they can be. Anyone looking to adopt either Katniss or
Primrose should do their research into the breeds and be fully aware of the medical issues that can come
up with these breeds of dogs so they can be sure that they can provide them with the necessary medical
attention down the road if it arises. Katniss and Primrose have both received a clean bill of health from
the vet, but it is always best to be prepared for the types of health concerns that could arise for this breed
down the road.
The girls have only been on a few car rides, but they have both done very well. Both times they travelled
securely in a crate and were happy to just curl up and lay down. Occasionally they would get up and give
me some sweet puppy dog eyes, but they were always calm and quiet. Right now I would consider
Katniss and Primrose to be a medium to high energy dog, because they are still puppies and they have
lots of puppy energy. They love to spend time in the back yard running around, and then they come
inside and will do lots more chasing, wrestling, keep away with toys and lots of chewing as well. Once
they are tuckered out they will find a comfortable spot on the pet bed and curl up for a nice long nap.
They have recently figured out how to jump up on the couch, and when we watch TV in the evenings they
will jump up and sleep on the couch, occasionally they will snuggle with us, but for the most part they find
their own spot and curl up.
Currently Katniss and Primrose are living in a home with adults, teens, old dogs, young dogs, big dogs
and small dogs. They get along really well with everyone and they seem to have a really good idea on
how to change their play behaviour depending on who they are trying to initiate play with. They have
been very respectful of our older dogs boundaries and tend to give them their space and not bother them
too much. We also have a cat in our home and both Katniss and Primrose are extremely interested in our
cat, they are very excitable when they see her and are very interested in getting to where she is. On the
occasion that they have come face to face with the cat they have been very gentle, but when she is out of
reach they do both like to bark at her. I would suggest that if there is a cat in their forever home, that it be
a dog savvy cat that understands how to behave around dogs.
Now to talk specifically about their personalities.
Katniss is a big wonderful goofy girl, she will brighten your day with her happy go lucky attitude and her
little wiggle bums that turn into wiggle body. Katniss really loves her people and will seek out affections
and gets really excited when you talk to her. Katniss would do well on her own, but would fit into any
crowd, she’s not bossy and is very go with the flow. She tends to be more laid back in the house when
there are strange noises and doesn’t seem to be bothered by anything going on that doesn’t directly
involve her.
Primrose is a slightly smaller girl and she is all business. She is a very independent girl and likes to do
things on her own terms. She is still a cuddle bug, who has full bum wiggles but she does not seek out
affections as much. Prim is much more on alert inside the home, and will jump up and bark at most
strange noises that she hears, but does not carry on barking. She always seems ready to go for an
adventure.
Being Katniss and Primrose are still such young puppies, we will only consider a home for them where
someone is home or has the capability to come home throughout the day. Puppies need to be taken
outside for bathroom breaks very regularly when they are small and will not be able to hold it for an 8 hour
work day. We are also looking for a family or person that is fully aware of the time commitment of a
puppy and the work involved. Puppies are a total joy and bring so much love and happiness into a home,
but you cannot underestimate the work and time involved in raising a puppy properly. They need
constant supervision while young to expedite the house training stage and to ensure they aren’t chewing
on anything inappropriate.
Anyone interested in one of these pups needs to think ahead to the holiday season…are you travelling?
Having large gatherings at your home? Then sadly this won’t be an ideal time to be bringing a new dog
into the home. But if you have a travel free holiday season and will be mostly be spending quiet days and
nights at home, then this would be a great time to introduce a new dog into the home. All new dogs need
consistency and routine in the weeks and months following an adoption so we have to ask all our
applicants to think ahead as to what the holidays realistically will look like before submitting an application
for one of these girls.
Katniss and Primrose are each looking to find their perfect forever home, somewhere they can grow and
learn to become the best version of themselves, go to lots of training classes, have lots of playtime, go
out on adventures with their family, and most of all to never be left behind and to feel like a treasured
family member for the rest of their lives. These girls have been an absolute delight to have in our home
and their big personalities will keep your heart full. If you think that you can offer one of these girls the
best home there could be, then I urge you to apply now!
