Anika

ADOPTED

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Let me introduce you to this gorgeous girl Anika, a German Shepherd who is about 11 weeks old. Anika currently weighs 22 pounds, and this pup still has lots of growing to do, she has some big paws and a solid structure indicating she will be a large sturdy dog.  Anika is a stunner of a dog, she has beautiful black/tan markings, though she will likely lose some of the black colours as she gets older.  Her fur is that super soft puppy fur that will eventually become the longer shedding hair that you will find around your home!  Anika is such a sweet natured dog and you can see it when you look into her beautiful brown eyes, she loves maintaining eye contact with her humans and it almost feels like she is reading your mind and your soul.  This pup is definitely full of mischief and she will constantly be keeping you on your toes.

Anika along with her 3 siblings were saved from a puppy mill and taken in by Pound Dog to give them the best chance at finding their forever home.  Anika was full of joy and excitement when we brought her into our home and it didn’t take long for her to warm up to her surroundings! She loves to explore her surroundings, she will test and see what she is and is not allowed to play with.  Anika has already shown some interest in trying to chew on things that she shouldn’t, like the wooden banister or a chair leg, but she is very good with her correction and re-direction.  Anika is great at keeping herself occupied by initiating play with the other dogs, or by finding a good chew bone and taking it to the pet bed.

Anika would do well living in a detached home with a big fenced in backyard for her to roam and explore on a daily basis.  She loves to be outside playing but she wants her humans to be outside enjoying the fresh air with her.  Anika does not require someone to constantly attend to her, but she wants to be where her humans are, she doesn’t like to be put outside if you’re not going to stay out with her. She absolutely loves her foster dog siblings and wants to run around and play with them when they are outside, once she comes in there is always a bit more play time then usually she finds a nice quiet place to take a nap! Anika’s ideal home would have another playful dog for her to expel some energy, but we also think Anika would do well as an only dog if her new family has lots of time to spend with her.  Anika is already a very confident girl and will try to push the other dogs around to get what she wants.  She will not be suited to go to a home with another female or dominant dog, but in saying that, she also shouldn’t be paired with a dog who is super submissive as she will take advantage. A well-balanced medium to large sized male dog would be a good fit for her as a sibling.  Anika is also currently living with a cat, she has seen the cat on many occasions and typically just ignores her, even when some of the other dogs in the home are whining at the cat. If her forever home has a cat, it should be dog savvy as we don’t know how Anika’s prey drive will change as she gets older.  Anika also lives with two young teens in the house, being as she is still a puppy we have been working on her mouthing and she does better and better every day, she loves when the kids get down on the floor and play with her! Anika loves playing some light tug of war, or chasing after a ball or squeaky toy.  Anika is excellent with the kids, but we think she would do well if she had children in her forever home that were over the age of 8, that are well versed with proper dog play as Anika is going to grow up to be quite a big girl.

Anika would love a big fenced in backyard to be able to run around and play in, she loves playing outside so much and it is probably her favourite thing to do, especially if there are places for her to dig holes.  Anika will require a fully fenced, escape proof and dig proof backyard to ensure that she is safe.  Anika is crate trained, so when it is bedtime or time for the humans to leave the house we put her in her crate with a treat.  Anika has loved her crate from day one and will happily run right in and wait for her tasty treat. She will occasionally let out a little howl or a bark to let you know that she’s still in there, just in case you forgot, but she always settles down and is happy.  Anika is currently fed in her crate to help encourage her love for being in the crate.

Anika is a really good eater and her favourite time of the day is meal time!  She is extremely food motivated which makes her training sessions such a breeze. We have never seen a puppy act so calm while their food is being made, she will lay down super quietly and wait until we pick up her bowl to take her to her feeding spot.  She’s eager for her food, so she will wait patiently for us to open her crate and then run right in to start eating her food.

Anika has been very good so far with her house training.  In her first few days as a young pup there were some accidents, which is to be expected.  Her accidents are becoming much fewer and further between, and this will only continue to improve as she gets older and with continued consistency and training.  Her forever home will need to make sure they remain diligent with her during the first few weeks to ensure that she knows she is to go outside. Anika knows to come when she is called and knows she needs to sit before getting a treat or some pets. Overall, Anika is such a well-mannered little girl that she has been an absolute dream to have. Once she gets some playtime outside she mostly likes to lay around and keep an eye on what you’re up to. Anika is a pretty chill and relaxed pup, if you get up and leave the room though you can bet she is going to follow you to see what you’re up to!  She doesn’t want to risk missing out on possibly some treats! Anika absolutely loves getting pets and receiving love and affection and she is very eager to return the favour, she will rub up against you and give you lots of kisses.

Anika has been on a few car rides so far and she has done very well, each time she travelled in a crate in the back seat and she laid down and didn’t make a peep.  Anika has been doing very well on her walks, she absolutely loves to go out to see and smell everything she can. She walks very well on her leash and only occasionally pulls if she sees something exciting up ahead.  As she gets older she will become much more confident with her walking. Continued walks will have this girl being a star walker! Basic obedience training with Advanced Obedience will be a must with Anika as it will help her develop a wonderful relationship with her new family, but also it will help her to understand what is expected of her and help set out rules in her new home.  Anika is very intelligent and is going to be a very strong-willed dog and she will need consistency and structure in her forever home in order for her to continue to thrive throughout her days.  Anika is going to be a big strong girl and she is not suitable for first time dog owners.  Anika’s new family will need to have experience with large working breed dogs and be willing to provide ongoing training past the initial basic obedience.  Anika would likely excel at agility training as she loves to run and jump off of just about anything.  We are also looking for a family or person that is fully aware of the time commitment of a puppy and the work involved.  Puppies are a total joy and bring so much love and happiness into a home, but you cannot underestimate the work and time involved in raising a puppy properly.  They need constant supervision while young to expedite the house training stage and to ensure they aren’t chewing on anything inappropriate.

Anika is looking for her forever family with someone who will spend their time walking and playing with her, going to training class, and someone who will relax with her at the end of the day. Ideally she would like to have a large fenced yard with another young playful dog to keep her company and run around with. Anika is such a beautiful, calm and sweet natured dog and she is looking for someone who will love her forever and be active with her daily. Anika has been such an easy dog to love, her eyes and mannerism say it all in how sweet she is, if you’re ready for your days to be filled with lots of walks, playtime, and snuggles then give this gorgeous girl a chance!
