Vixen

ADOPTED

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Isn’t she stunning?  Vixen is a mix of Australian Cattle dog and Australian Shepherd.  She is 3mths old and ready to go to her forever home.  Vixen was part of a litter of pups rescued from a puppy mill. She will be medium size, very high energy dog capable of doing so much as the breeds she has in her are known for their agility, focus and stamina.  This dog would make a great running/ bike partner and of course will be the perfect fit for those wanting a working dog…agility…flyball…herding…scent work…the list is endless.  She is being socialized with other dogs in their foster home.  A home with another young, active, male dog would be fine and fun, but not necessary.  She has not been exposed to cats, however with supervision and the proper introduction should be fine with them.  Vixen will be an amazing family pet for very active and outdoorsy people.  Yes, she is a gorgeous pup, but please read the bio in detail before sending in an application as she will need a very specific home and is not a breed mix suited to everyone.

Vixen is young still and is a herding breed.  With her high energy and strong herding instincts, even though she can get along well with older children, her herding tendencies (nipping) will be only heightened with the energy, noise and movements of small children so we will only consider a home with children that are over 8 years old.

Vixen will love a large fenced yard so she can work daily on training daily (mental stimulation) as well run around freely.  That daily mental stimulation is just as important as the physical exercise for this breed, if not enough they tend to create all kinds of chaos inside the houses just to satisfy their boredom. Anyone interested in Vixen must be fully aware, and capable of handling, the energy and working demands of this breed mix.  They are not suitable for first time dog owners unless there is a strong background of work with herding breeds.  ACD’s and Aussies are both very strong minded, highly intelligent dogs that absolutely need to run and work to be happy.  A herding breed that isn’t properly exercised and doesn’t have its brain worked daily will be an unhappy and unbalanced dog and this will result in behavioural issues.  We want only the very best for our pups so are looking for those people/families that are fully invested in providing a herding breed its best life.  Work doesn’t need to be herding, but we have to acknowledge that herding behaviours will be strong in these dogs so need their people to be fully aware of that.  You can’t have a herding dog and not expect to have to deal with herding behaviours, even though the dog may not be living on a working ranch.  Brain games, advanced training, and an active life are necessary for these amazing dogs!!  It is quite remarkable what these dogs are capable of learning; we need her people to be more than just a little interested in obedience training.

Anyone interested in Vixen needs to live within 1hr of Cambridge, ON as she must be returned to our vet later on to be spayed.  She will be adopted out on a contract that stipulates this and it is mandatory.  This is covered in the adoption fee.

We will only consider a home for Vixen where someone is home or has the capabilities to come home throughout the day.  She needs to be taken outside for bathroom breaks very regularly when small and will not be able to hold if for a long work day.  Please keep in mind that if you work from home you need to have a plan in place for a crating schedule for the pup as puppies need 100% of your supervision when not in their crate; you cannot expect to work and have the puppy running around in the room with you as they won’t have your full attention.  Plus, she is learning about going out for potty breaks already and if unsupervised it may set her back.

We are looking for a family that is fully aware of the time commitment of a puppy and the work involved.  Puppies are a total joy and bring so much love and happiness into a home, but you cannot under estimate the work and time involved raising a puppy properly.  They need constant supervising to expedite the chewing on anything inappropriate.  We are also looking for a family that will crate train as we fully believe that this is the best for pups and offers them a quiet and secure ‘den’ to call their own.  A crate trained pup is a blessing as it offers a safe place to put them when you can’t be watching them all the time.  Lastly, we are looking for people or family for Vixen that have prior experience with a high energy dog.  This breed mix needs to have an active lifestyle to thrive and be the best dog for you.

All new dogs need consistency and routine the weeks and months following an adoption.  We ask all our applicant to be home a few days (take some time off) when the puppy comes, so that the puppy as well as yourself have time to adjust and bond.  We will be expecting our adoptive families to level 1 obedience school and then follow on to advanced obedience classes with her.  Becoming that strong leader for her will keep her challenged and loving exploring new things, which in return they will give you that unconditional love and that great dog behaviour that every dog owner wants.  We are looking for families for the pups that are 100% committed to taking the dog through to advanced levels of obedience school to keep working her brain.

We handle this pup every day and will be offering her everything she needs to be the best puppy she can be when she leaves our care but we need the adoptive family to take over for us when they get her home.  We take our responsibilities to our pups very seriously and only want the best for them.  We adore this puppy and will settle for nothing less than a dedicated, loving family that is well aware of the breed requirements and the needs of a puppy of this breed mix.  We also are looking for a family that want the dogs she will grow to become, not just the little bundle of furry cuteness.  This breed is very affectionate and loyal to their people.   They are all weather, rugged and active dogs and their people need to already be living a very active lifestyle and want a dog to join them on adventures.  Are you an avid hiker?  Cyclist?  Runner?   Here’s a pup for you!

If you have been thinking about adding a medium active breed puppy to your family and have the time and patience to properly raise a pup then Vixen may just be perfect for you.  I know you will fall in love with her as deeply as we have when you meet her!!
