Camellia

ADOPTED

The Camellia flower is a symbol of love, adoration, and longing, which represents this sweet spirited Pug perfectly! Camellia has so much love and adoration to share, and longs to constantly be at her family’s side. She’s sitting on the arm of the couch beside me while I write this. 🙂

Also affectionately referred to as Cammy, this 4 year old sweetheart came from a puppy mill where she had been used as a breeding machine for profit. Gratefully, she has adjusted well to her new lifestyle. She does lean toward being clingy, to the point of literally being underfoot at times, so her forever family will need to ensure all members participate in her ongoing care and training to prevent over-attachment to any single individual and separation anxiety. A commitment to attend obedience training will be a mandatory requirement for her adoption.

Camellia came from the puppy mill on the porky side of the scale. She has already lost some weight and is now about 18 pounds. Her exercise and diet regime will need to be continued to ensure she gets to her ideal weight. This should be easy enough as she’s done fabulous learning to walk on a leash, has significantly increased her stamina, and is always eager for her twice-daily walks. She’ll happily walk or hike 4-5km but hasn’t gone longer than that to date.

Cammy is in good health overall and was recently spayed. Her forever family will need to be familiar with the specific health considerations of her breed. For example, flat-faced/brachycephalic dogs do not do well with heat and tend to snore and snort. She’ll need her facial folds and eyes cleaned regularly. Pug eyes protrude more than most breeds so care needs to be taken accordingly. Pugs also have a propensity for overeating.

Going back to the snorting, she has a full repertoire of hilarious snorts, grunts, groans and squeals, especially after she’s just been let out of her crate. Camellia’s foster Mom jokes that she acts like “a little pug in a China shop” while she’s getting all her sillies out. Her antics include play pouncing and squishing her face into your palm for full face rubs! As for her crate, she has no problem being in it overnight or while the family is away for a few hours. Both her foster Mom and Dad work from home so she’s used to having company for the majority of time and being let outside often. Being with people is her passion so Cammy would not thrive in a home where she’s left alone frequently for long durations.

Camellia’s both food motivated and eager to please her people thus quite trainable. She quickly caught on to Sit, Walk (heel) and to do her business outdoors. She’s good in a car and her recall while on lead has been spotless (it hasn’t been tested off lead). Two things that she has NOT yet learned is how to ask to go outside and how to do her business while on lead. She’s quite secretive about her bathroom habits, preferring to do it out of sight when she can get away with it. Both of these can be overcome with time and training but she will need to have access to at least a small patch of fenced-in grass and to be let outside frequently in the meanwhile.

Cammy has not shown any prey drive whatsoever nor does she bark. She’s been known to howl on occasion when her favourite person has left without her but it’s always been short lived. Accordingly she would be suitable for a condo or town home.

Camellia seems indifferent to other dogs, including her Yorkie foster brother. They coexist wonderfully but do not engage in play or show overt affection. She does get jealous when he’s getting attention so would prefer to be the only doggo in her new home. She’s untested with cats but would likely be fine with any dog-savvy cats. Similarly she’s untested with kids under 12 years old but her behaviour while in foster care suggests she would generally be indifferent unless there was petting or food involved, in which case she’d be all in!

Camellia’s pretty low key and happiest while she’s near her people. She’ll nap or chew a bone or just watch whatever you’re doing for as long as you’re doing it. And if you’re sitting still or laying down she’s always up for a good cuddle! One of her favourite ways to chill out is to sit up like a human while leaning back against you, thus providing you complete access to give her belly rubs.

Cammy has limitless love to give. She just needs to find the right family to give it to. Maybe it could be yours?
