Shagger

ADOPTED

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Shagger is a super sweet 5mth old Old English Sheepdog/Poodle mix puppy who came to us from a very sad start in a puppy mill.  Shagger was living in filthy conditions with limited nutrition.  When we got him he was terribly underweight, and had an awful bladder infection.  We took Shagger into our care to complete his recovery to health and to find him a loving forever home.  Shagger is a happy, affectionate, cuddly, sweet puppy who is now ready to find a lovingfamily to call his own.

Shagger needs a home where someone is home or has the capabilities to come home throughout the day.  Because he had a bladder infection for so long his bladder is very irritated still.   He has been cured of the infection but it will take a bit still before he doesn’t feel the need to have to pee a lot.  He will not be able to hold it for an 8hr work day.  We are also looking for a family or person that is fully aware of the time commitment of a puppy and the work involved.  Puppies are a total joy and bring so much love and happiness into a home, but you cannot underestimate the work and time involved in raising a puppy properly.  They need constant supervision while young to expedite the house training stage and to ensure they aren’t chewing on anything inappropriate.  We are also looking for a family that will crate train Shagger as we fully believe that this is the best for pups and offers them a quiet and secure “den” to call their own.  A crate trained pup is a blessing as it offers a safe place to put them when you can’t be watching them all the time.  Shagger is great in his crate and even eats his meals in his crate and runs into it to eat eagerly.  Shagger is doing well on his housetraining now that his infection is cleared up and will go the bathroom every time you take him out.  He can still have an accident in the house if he isn’t being properly supervised so his family needs to pay attention to him.  We are in a routine of letting him out regularly throughout the day and in doing so have met with great success.  He is a smart puppy and catches on to what you want from him quickly.  He just had a very late start to housetraining and only since his bladder infection was fully cleared could we effectively start this so his new family needs to understand that this is still a work in progress.  Shagger just recently had an ultrasound to ensure that all was well with his kidneys due to the infection that he had, it came back normal so he is good to find his forever home now.

Shagger lives with other dogs and cats in his foster home.  He is great with all of his furry siblings.  He plays particularly well with his young French Bulldog foster brother who enjoys wrestle games and tug games.  Any dog in the home would have to be tolerant of a young dog wanting to play and wrestle.   Our cats are very accustomed to dogs and puppies so know not to run or react to them and so Shagger doesn’t pay them any mind.  A cat that will react or run though will entice a puppy to chase so best he go to a home with a dog savvy cat should there be a cat in the home. Shagger isnt being fostered with children but with his sweet temperament we feel he would do well in a home with children over 6yrs of age.  He loves affection and attention so would do well with kids who would like to cuddle him.  Shagger is a submissive pup who roles over for belly rubs easily and just wants you to love him.  He can be a little shy when greeting people but it is nothing that won’t correct with time, confidence building, and more socialization.  When you think of what his first months of life must have been like and the fact that as a wee pup he was trapped in a barn with limited human interaction it isn’t surprising at all that he likes to asses new situations and people first before going ahead.  He loves people though and wants to make friends with everyone he meets.  He is, at his base, a very friendly, sweet and darling dog.  We have mentioned how sweet he is a few times now but there really isn’t a better word to describe this beautiful puppy.

Shagger rides quietly in the car while we drive but is prone to car sickness.  We currently crate him when driving but he could certainly grow into a dog seatbelt as he gets bigger and gets used to the motions of the car.   He would like to accompany you on your outings and be taken to fun and exciting places.  He loves going for walks and exploring the world around him. He is funny on walks as he is super bouncy and kind of all over the place so working on walking nicely at our side is something we are working on.  Being a Doodle, walks are all what fun might lie ahead and getting to it fast!  The only thing that detracts from his mission is the constantly wagging tail that whips back and forth with every step he takes.  He gets pure joy from being out on his walks and his tail shows it.

Shagger is very friendly and loves a lot of attention.  He can’t get enough pets and affection.  He is a dog that wants to be where you are and would like his family to be home more than away.  He needs a home as well where there is easy access to the yard for potty time.  As mentioned he has recovered from a pretty severe UTI and even still, when the need to go hits him, he has to go NOW.  There isnt time to be taking an elevator or going down many flights of stairs. So unfortunately condo and apartment living aren’t suited for him.   Shagger will require a fenced in yard where he can be put out to do his business and run around.   He does need supervision when outside as, being a 5mth old puppy, he gets into everything, and can easily destroy your gardens or chew on patio furniture if left out unattended and bored.

Doodles are mixed breed dogs and therefore exhibit a spectrum of behaviours that are present in the breeds of their parents, however there are some behavioural characteristics that are very common that people should make note of. First, Doodles have a tendency to be very social dogs that do much better with their people around and engaged with them more than not. A Doodle that is left alone for long periods of time regularly can develop depression, anxiety, become obsessive about certain activities and these can result in other destructive behaviours. Doodles also have a tendency to be high energy dogs that need an abundance of mental and physical exercise, especially as they are growing into adulthood. These are not couch potato dogs that are content with a few short walks a day. If you have a more laid back lifestyle and are a homebody, a Doodle will not likely be a great match for you. They are very intelligent dogs who like to work, so taking them beyond basic training is highly recommended to help them live their best life. They like to push boundaries and challenge you and many Doodle owners have claimed their dogs are always two to three steps ahead of them…and this all pretty much sums up Shagger! If you are committed to advanced training, lots of physical exercise and exploring new walking/hiking spaces, if you have a goal of learning dog sports, then Shagger just might be the right guy for you…you will need to be sure you can keep up with him because he is a young guy on a mission and he does not have the time to mosey along.

I would like to make very clear here that Shagger is NOT hypoallergenic. Shagger is a “Shepadoodle” which means he is part Old English Sheepdog, a shedding dog.  He is a low shed dog but we cannot make the claim that he is a non-shedding dog.   He will not be a suitable dog for allergy sufferers, sorry!  Shagger also requires regular brushing as his fur will easily mat up if not kept up.  Regular trips to the groomer to keep him nicely trimmed will also be required. There is quite a bit of upkeep with this coat type and it can become a huge mess quickly so the time and energy to keep up this type of coat will have to be taken into consideration as well.  This is quite the undertaking and not something everyone wants to take on or has the time or desire to do.  He has already been to the groomer once already to get his coat all tidied up and this will be a every few months requirement for his future owners.

We adore this puppy and will settle for nothing less than a dedicated, loving family that is well aware of the breed requirements and the needs of a puppy and this breed mix.  If you have been thinking about adding a doodle puppy to your family and have the time and patience to properly raise a pup then he may just be perfect for you.  We know you will fall in love with him as deeply as we have when you meet him.
