Nancy

Hello everyone, please allow me the pleasure of introducing our fancy Nancy!

Nancy is a female Labradoodle, approximately 4 years old and about 45lbs. She has the typical Labradoodle tan colouring and lovely curls. She has super cute floppy ears and big brown eyes. She stands tall with long legs but she is at a perfect weight range. She currently has a little balding on her lower trunk area that can happen due to heavy breeding and it’s caused by hormonal fluctuations. This should improve with time and good nutrition.
Her name came from a few different sources. My son chose the name from Stranger Things because of a character named Nancy, who has similar looking curls to our Nancy. The name just suited her well. As time went on, she suited much more to Fancy Nancy, again due to her hair. But she also loves to lay down with her front paws crossed over in the front. She looks quite fancy when she does that!

Nancy is rescued from a puppy mill and is very much enjoying retired life now! She is very well adjusted and calm. She can be a bit anxious and jumpy with sudden movements and noises but she loves to meet people of all ages and cautiously checks out other dogs on our walks as well. Nancy settled right into our home. She wasn’t quite sure of the crate at first but that was short lived. She loves it now and is super calm while crated, never barking or whining in it; just curls up and sleeps. She is not a heavy chewer either, so she gets a cozy blanket in her crate and is happy to be in there. She will even go in with just a simple “in your house” command. And most times just goes in when the door opens as she knows what we will say then.
She has never had any accidents in our house, the trailer or any other house we have taken her to. She has quite the bladder control as she can hold it for quite some time, which is quite normal for mill mamas anyways.

The first few days she didn’t understand what a dog bed was. She would lay anywhere on the carpet or hard floor. Now she has since found her dog bed and really enjoys the extra cushion, as she should! 

Nancy went to the vet to get a check up and her spay surgery. Everything went well with the surgery, she was just a bit peeved with us on the evening of, which is totally normal. She was previously microchipped and up to date on her vaccines already too. They did find a very infected right ear which has been treated. They cleaned her ears during her surgery also, and we are cleaning it at home every couple of days as well. Sometimes those can take a long time to clear out especially in neglectful conditions in the puppy mill. Regular cleaning of her ears in her forever home will be essential to help clear it.

Nancy loves going for walks in the neighbourhood. She also loves coming to the bus stop and seeing all the kids and parents for lots of pets and attention. Typically she gets a short walk in the mornings Monday to Friday, and a longer walk about 30 minutes long mid afternoon. On weekends or holidays we try to get her in for two good 30 minute walks morning and afternoon. 

Be warned that she LOVES rabbits and if she sees one she will pull and be on the lookout for quite a while, even after it’s long gone, she doesn’t quite forget. She has a high prey drive for rabbits and such and will not be suited to a home with a cat.  She is gentle when meeting other dogs. Bigger dogs or ones that bark at her require more time for her to get closer and comfortable and best to be avoided. She never seems to bark at anything while on walks though. Other dogs will be barking up a storm and she just doesn’t seem to mind. She could go to a home with a mild mannered, gentle neutered male dog but will also be very happy being the only dog in the home.  She would like to be the only female dog in the home. 

Nancy is crate trained and house trained. She goes into her house without any problems or hesitation. We have never had any accidents in her crate or in our house. She has a bladder of steel and can hold it for quite a while. No worries of midnight pee breaks or if you are working outside of the house all day. She is quiet and calm in her crate as well, which is great for those people in attached dwellings. She does whimper and whine a tiny bit when she sees people leaving the house, but this only happens when she is outside of the crate.

Nancy eats her meals in the crate and has free range of her water bowl when she is out and about. Her eating habits have been slow to establish. She just isn’t used to good nutrition and maybe even didn’t get fed regularly. We have had to work on her eating a lot, and some days are better than others. In new locations she tends to not eat very well. We have a trailer and when we go there she doesn’t eat the same as at home. Things are different with new sights and smells and that just makes her a bit apprehensive to eat normally. She grazes more at the trailer as we will just leave her kibble out and she will nibble when she feels like it. This may improve over time or will just be her normal. 

Nancy loves people of all ages. She wins over everyone with her chill and relaxed demeanour. She doesn’t seem too interested in toys at this time. Small stuffed animals she does like though, and she is almost maternal with those, gently picking them up to move them and licking them clean. She also seems to like to steal things randomly: dirty socks, towels, etc are all fair game. But she is so gentle about it and will give it to you when you ask her too. Never destroying anything in the process.

Nancy is great in the car, she loves car rides so far. She has a seatbelt and will ride on the seat and just lay down and sleep. When we travel to the trailer and we have a full vehicle, she just lays down on the floor of the backseat under the kids feet and sleeps there. No car sickness at all. We have a trailer and she does great there. She is quiet and chill, and doesn’t bark. 

Nancy is so easy going she will suit just about any family situation/dynamic. She would make a great family pet. She would still need regular walks to stay active but also really enjoys quality relaxing time with or without her people around. I’m sure she would love to be part of many family adventures. She could go to a home with young children as long as the adult(s) in the home are very dog experienced and will be cognizant of the fact that Nancy is a mill dog and as such, gets startled easily…so children in the home need to be of the calmer sort that won’t be running around, coming up on the dog quickly.  Mill dogs are also flight risks so the children and adults will all need to ensure that doors/gates are always shut securely and quickly and that Nancy is always leashed and in control of an adult when outside and not in a secure fenced yard.  

Nancy would make a perfect family dog! We would like her to go to an active adventurous home as I think she can handle these things and would benefit from the exposure and love. Another dog is not necessary because she is happy just being alone and we don’t feel she longs for sharing. But I don’t think that is a deal breaker. We just want to see her loved! You will win the lottery with this one!
