ADOPTION PENDING

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Meet Scooter, a 3-4 year old Moyen Poodle. He is the ultimate couch potato and household supervisor. He weighs about 25 lbs and is the perfect medium sized buddy.

Scooter was used for breeding in a puppy mill. Since leaving the puppy mill he has been learning how to live in a home environment and has been thriving. He has shown affection since day one. He is a single dog in his foster home and does well with this. He has spent time with other dogs and would be a good friend to a dog of similar size and temperament as well. He would benefit from learning how to play through another dog’s experience. He hasn’t met a cat since being in his foster home, but he doesn’t show a desire to chase small animals, so a dog-savvy cat could be a possibility in his forever home.

Scooter would ideally be placed in a home with teenage or older children, or preferably,  in an adult only home. As a mill dog he startles easily and the noise and activity of young kids would not be suited to him.  A secure fenced yard would be beneficial but is not a requirement if you are active. He has spent time in the yard at his foster home, but his exercise and enrichment comes from exploring the neighborhood scents, walking to the river, or going on trail walks. He currently walks for a little over an hour per day. His energy level is currently low to medium, but that may change as he gets more comfortable. Poodles are usually fairly active and smart dogs, so it’s best to keep this in mind as Scooter gains strength, endurance, and  acclimates to the outside world; and be open to providing more engagement, exercise and stimulus so he can live his best life.

Scooter is a quiet dog, though he will let you know if someone is at the door. He can be skittish in some situations. He has had some challenges with crate training, but is making solid progress again. He will make a mournful howl if he has been in the crate for a bit and needs a pee. Scooter will initially make some noise in the crate when he goes for car rides, but he stops after a couple minutes of driving. Continued exposure via short car trips to fun places can help him associate car rides to something positive.

Scooter will need regular professional grooming, and will need to be brushed regularly to maintain a healthy coat and skin. Scooter has had grooming, and a bath from his fosters and a groomer and he has been well behaved for both. He is healthy overall. He had some dental disease that has recently been treated by the vet. He has been hesitant to take certain treats and chew toys, which we suspect to be because of discomfort from the inflammation in his mouth.  The dentistry went well and he is already eating better.

Scooter’s best trait is his love of “his people” and the couch.  He is a great companion for walks and then for relaxing at home.  He hasn’t had any formal obedience training at this point as our focus has been teaching him all about life outside of a barn,  but we are working on the basics. He is well behaved in the house and has been excellent with housetraining. Scooter doesn’t yet understand toys, but he does get the zoomies most days and shows that he wants to play. We have turned his zoomies into a time to play bow with him and run around the house.

Scooter is good on walks and doesn’t react to squirrels, birds or cats. He will sometimes stop and stare at other dogs or people when we’re out and about and will need a little enouragement to start walking again. He is friendly but timid when meeting new people. He has had lots of chances to interact and engage in new environments since going to his foster home, but he is still decompressing and figuring out how to “dog”.

Adopt Scooter and gain a loyal companion and a new best friend !!
