David

ADOPTION PENDING

Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. At Pound Dog Rescue, we believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

Meet David, a 4 year-old Moyen Poodle.  This handsome boy measures approximately 19 inches at the shoulder and weighs around 30 lbs.  David has the elegant physique of a Standard Poodle, but in a smaller package.  David has a soft curly blonde coat with apricot hair on his ears and tail.  He is very sweet and affectionate.

David came to PDR from a puppy mill, however, while household noises may be new to him, they have not bothered him and, on walks, he has not been fazed by trucks, school buses, motorcycles, bikes or scooters.  He can do a full flight of stairs, up and down, carpeted or not, with no problem.

David would love a home with a fenced yard so that he can run around looking for squirrels, rabbits and chipmunks. He is very calm and quiet in the house, but he will sometimes make a fuss in his crate when we leave the house.  David is currently going for walks three times a day, morning, afternoon and before bed.  He behaves quite well on his walks but tends to pull when following a scent.  David would like to meet everyone we see on a neighbourhood walk, human and canine.

David loves to cuddle on the couch.  David takes treats from your hand very gently.  He will even allow you to take it back from him.  When his leash comes out, he does a subtle tap dance until it’s attached.  David is starting to show more interest in his toys and he will chew on a hard toy or toss a stuffie around.  David perks up if he sees a dog on television and tries to figure out where they went when they disappear from the screen.  Sometimes after David does a “big stretch” he will do an army crawl on his belly to get closer to you.  It’s the cutest thing.

David is considered hypoallergenic as he is a hair breed dog.  With this comes regular brushing, bathing, ear cleaning and grooming. If you keep his coat short and tidy you should be able to keep any matting from occurring.  You will need to continue getting David used to the grooming process so short amounts of time brushing will help him become more comfortable with the process.

David is house trained.  When he first arrived, he wore a belly band for several days and he did try to “mark” a few times.  Now he is completely trustworthy.  David goes into his crate in the bedroom by himself at bedtime.  He will sleep for 7 to 8 hours and when he is ready to get up he will start to whimper quietly. Upon emerging from his crate, David likes to start his day with some belly rubs. David is not as keen on the crate in the kitchen.  He eats his meals in his crate but has to be convinced to go in when we want to leave him in the crate when we go out.  David travels in a crate and has been generally quiet on his first few car trips.  However, he has been car sick. He now takes Cerenia , an anti-nausea med from the vet, prior to trips and this helps!

David does “sit” very well.  He “sits” himself if he thinks you have something in your hand that he might like.  He also “sits” if you ask him.  He learned “down” in one lesson but he seems to think it involves showing his tummy, so we have to work on that.  When David is out of sight in the backyard, he comes immediately when called.  Obedience training would help him improve his leash walking and to bond with his new family.  David would probably enjoy advancing to dog sports, such as agility or flyball.

David has been to the vet for his vaccines, neuter and microchip.  He is on heartworm, tick and flea prevention meds.  The vet reported that “there were no concerns on his physical exam and his teeth are in pretty good shape”.

David is doing well as an only dog in his foster home and he would be fine as an only dog in his forever home.  He could also do well with another mild natured, moderate energy dog in his home.  He has not been tested with cats.

David loves being near his people and would prefer being in a home where he is not left alone for long hours.  He would be an excellent home office buddy, lying quietly in the room with you while you work.  David hasn’t had the opportunity to be around children but he is so gentle and good-natured that he would probably be fine with children 10+.  David’s favourite thing is a good cuddle, so be prepared.

If you are looking for a sweet natured, non shedding, loveable dog, David might just be what you are looking for.  He has come a long way in foster care and is now set to find his happily ever after!
